PDF Access Check

PDF accessibility basics

PDF reading order: check the sequence, not just the page.

A PDF can look right while its content is presented in a confusing sequence by assistive technology. Check how the content is read and how keyboard focus moves through interactive elements.

Start with one page you can follow

Choose a representative page with columns, a sidebar or a table. Write down the order that preserves its meaning. Listen with a screen reader and compare. Also move through links and form fields using the keyboard. Investigate jumps, repeated content or missing information.

A two-column example

Intended reading

Column A: steps 1, 2 and 3.
Column B: steps 4, 5 and 6.

Useful sequence: 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5 → 6.

A sequence to investigate

Reading across rows can produce 1 → 4 → 2 → 5 → 3 → 6.

The words may all be present, but the instructions no longer arrive in order.

Tags, reading order and tab order

These are related but different. Tags describe structure; their order is a major part of reading sequence. Tab order controls navigation between interactive elements such as links and form fields. A page can expose a tag tree and still require corrections to sequence or navigation. See W3C’s PDF3 technique.

Inspect and repair with an appropriate editor

Adobe Acrobat Pro provides a Reading Order tool for inspecting regions and their order, along with tools for reviewing tags. Use the current Adobe instructions for the version you have. Inspect complex pages carefully and retest after changes.

If the source document is available, improve its structure before exporting again. Keep a copy of the original PDF. Recheck the exported document: a change in the authoring file does not prove that the resulting PDF is correct.

What can this free checker tell me?

PDF Access Check exposes basic tagging signals and other observations. It does not validate logical reading order. A green observation in the report cannot replace this manual test. Use the tagging guide and teaching files to understand what the detected structure means.

Frequently asked questions

Does selecting text in order prove the PDF reads correctly?

No. Treat selection as a preliminary observation. Compare actual assistive-technology reading and keyboard navigation with the intended meaning.

Can automatic tagging fix everything?

Review its output. Automated tagging is a starting point, especially when pages contain columns, sidebars or complex tables. Verify that the repaired sequence is meaningful.

Should I check every page?

A single page is useful for learning the process, but it cannot establish the state of the full document. Extend the review across the document, including different layouts and interactive content.
